TRENCH-BOWL

a large centrepiece bowl hand carved out of a single block of stone. this piece is a modern interpretation of a dough trencher bowl, a vessel dating back to medieval times that provided a warm place in the home for bread to rise prior to baking. these bowls were found in every home, and were traditionally carved by hand from wood.

client: monolith studio

a good dough bowl was handed down through a family, passing along the experiences that make a kitchen the heart of a home.

LAVA-STONE

recinto is made from lava solidification and is formed when lava cools down rapidly on the land surface after a volcanic eruption.

TRAVERTINE

a form of terrestrial limestone, this sedimentary rock is formed by calcium carbonate minerals from hot fresh springs.

DESIGN

sculpted from a single block of stone, this modern interpretation of a dough bowl features sharp edges and straight sides with a sweeping cut to define the bowl shape. the geometric form is inspired by the works of abstract painters such as ben nicholson 1894-1982 and ellsworth kelly 1923-2015, exploring silhouettes and casted shadows. the low-profile makes it an unobtrusive centrepiece for large dining table settings. the trench running down the centre of the form represents the traditions of families repairing their dough bowls if SPLITS-WOULD-APPEAR so that they could be passed down generation to generation.

HAND-CRAFTED-IN-MEXICO

the dark porous volcanic stone and travertine is unique to mexico, where it is quarried and carved by skilled local sculptors.
